Ingredients for 15-Minute Meatloaf Melts

  • 1 shallot
  • 1 pound meat loaf mix or ground beef
  • 1/2 cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 1/3 cup ketchup
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 slices provolone or Swiss cheese
  • 1-pound bag frozen cut green beans
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 potato hamburger buns, split
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 4 lettuce leaves

Directions for 15-Minute Meatloaf Melts

  1. Preheat the broiler.
  2. Grate the shallot over a large bowl. Add the meat loaf mix, breadcrumbs, half the ketchup, egg, Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon salt and several grinds of pepper. Use your hands to thoroughly combine the mixture, then divide it into 4 equal balls and shape each into a patty a little less than 1/2 inch thick. Arrange on a baking sheet and broil until the tops of the patties begin to firm up and brown, 3 to 4 minutes. Flip the patties with a metal spatula and continue to broil until cooked through, 2 to 3 minutes more.
  3. Brush each patty with some of the remaining ketchup and top each with a slice of cheese. Continue to broil until the cheese melts, about 30 seconds more.
  4. While the patties broil, put the green beans, butter, 1 tablespoon water, 1/2 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of pepper in a medium microwave-safe bowl. Cover and microwave until hot, 4 to 5 minutes.
  5. Open the buns and spread the cut sides with mayonnaise. Place a lettuce leaf and patty in each. Serve each sandwich with a small bowl of green beans.

  • Sandwich – A sandwich is a food typically consisting of vegetables, sliced cheese or meat, placed on or between slices of bread, or more generally any dish wherein bread serves as a container or wrapper for another food type. The sandwich began as a portable, convenient finger food in the Western world, though over time it has become prevalent worldwide. In the 21st century there has been considerable debate over the precise definition of sandwich; and specifically whether a hot dog or open sandwich can be categorized as such. In the United States, the Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration are the responsible agencies. The USDA uses the definition, “at least 35% cooked meat and no more than 50% bread” for closed sandwiches, and “at least 50% cooked meat” for open sandwiches.Sandwiches are a popular type of lunch food, taken to work, school, or picnics to be eaten as part of a packed lunch. The bread may be plain or be coated with condiments, such as mayonnaise or mustard, to enhance its flavour and texture. As well as being homemade, sandwiches are also widely sold in various retail outlets and can be served hot or cold. There are both savoury sandwiches, such as deli meat sandwiches, and sweet sandwiches, such as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The sandwich is named after its supposed inventor, John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich. The Wall Street Journal has described it as Britain’s “biggest contribution to gastronomy”.
  • Meatloaf – Meatloaf is a dish of ground meat that has been combined with other ingredients and formed into the shape of a loaf, then baked or smoked. The final shape is either hand-formed on a baking tray, or pan-formed by cooking it in a loaf pan. It is usually made with ground beef, although ground lamb, pork, veal, venison, poultry and seafood are also used, sometimes in combination. Vegetarian adaptations of meatloaf may use imitation meat or pulses. The cooked meatloaf can be sliced like a loaf of bread to make individual portions. It can easily become dry; therefore, various techniques exist to keep the dish moist, like mixing in bread crumbs and egg, covering it with sauce, wrapping it, or using moisture-enhancing ingredients in the mixture, such as filling it with fatty meats, rich cheeses, or vegetables.
